I have met a lot of people in my short existence. Some of them are wonderful and some are total shitbags. Other than Alaska, the only other person who has made a huge impact on my life is Katy Carlson. Originating from Texas, stereotypically you'd expect her to think big of herself but very conservatively about political and social issues. But Katy would surprise you. She's so well-rounded, knowing about pop culture and stuff that doesn't matter, but also more importantly, she knows about worldly issues, especially when it comes to Africa. She is so intelligent, having an opinion about anything and everything, yet she doesn't push her ideals into your face. I could talk for hours to her about things that really matter to us as human beings and us as women. In addition to being exceptionally smart, she is also very kind. She is gracious and thoughtful, ultimately caring more about others than about herself. She brings out the best in me, the powerful, strong person I know I can be -- and that's what really matters.
"Rae, I just love Africa so much. And I love learning. And I love learning about Africa." --Katy Carlson
